Vintage style room with light grey sofas, large victorian fireplace and pale yellow and grey horizontal striped walls

Whether you’re planning on making your home more attractive to sell or it’s just pure self-indulgence, we’ve got four different room styles to give you some inspiration to get you started.

Two images: first is of a modern room with mink coloured walls with a creamy gold leaf pattern on the wall behind creamy sofas. Second image is a bright yellow velvet chaisse longue in a room with black floorboards sitting in front of large black doors with a black, orange and yellow wallaper surround

Neutrals
Neutral colour schemes will always remain a popular fashionable choice. This option is ideal for those intending to put their property on the market, because it is a scheme most likely to appeal to the widest market, and least likely to offend. Our advice is, keep it neutral but for added interest mix and match different neutral tones. Grey is a big hit for this year.

Patterns
Patterns will continue to be a hot trend for 2008 with more oversized florals coming into play as well as darker tones for a truly opulent glamorous look. However, for the less brave or those who are marketing their property for sale, a more subtle approach is best advised. Either use a small amount of strong pattern e.g. on one wall with wallpaper, or some cushions or a rug, or alternatively opt for patterns in lighter, less imposing shades.

Wallpaper
Wallpaper with stone, leather or wood imagery is an easy way to update and change the look of the room. We love these fun wall coverings that are a great way to create the illusion of texture. A magnificent feature, perfect for applying around a chimney breast to make a focal point.

Stripes
Stripes are making a comeback in 2008 in a big way. Our advice is, combine stripes carefully. Hang subtle stripes vertically and add bold stripes horizontally to create a border around the room. Stripes can be bold or subtle, just be careful how you use them.
